This resource was a game-changer for my students. They were so tired of me harping on color symbolism and symbols within stories, until they got to use the symbols and colors to create their own masquerade masks. They were so creative with this assignment.

"Masque of the Red Death" is the perfect story to use when teaching symbolism. The assignments in this packet focus on color symbolism, as well as 5 other major symbols that are represented in the story. For the post-reading project, students will create their own masquerade mask, showing their understanding of symbolism as a tool, as well as the understanding of the symbolic representations of colors.
